Southern Style Biscuits

I grew up eating biscuits at least twice a week with dinner. It was our bread of choice. Growing up in a family of 6, these biscuits helped ensure everyone at the table had something they were excited to eat and made sure everyone left with a full tummy. The topping choices are endless! Try them with strawberry jam, honey, or my favorite, ribbon cane syrup mixed with a little softened butter.

These biscuits also make great breakfast sandwiches! Try adding bacon and a fried egg for a breakfast sandwich that is half the price of the drive thru and way more delicious. Double the batch to have biscuits for breakfast a couple times this week, and you will thank me later!

Southern Style Biscuits

Ingredients

2 Tablespoons canola oil

2 cups all purpose flour

1 Tablespoon white sugar

1 Tablespoon baking powder

1 teaspoon salt

½ cup cold butter

¾ cup milk

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 450℉.
  2. Pour canola oil into your cast iron skillet, or other heavy bottomed 8 inch skillet. Can also use a cake pan or pie plate if necessary.
  3. In a medium bowl mix together flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
  4. Cut in cold butter with a pastry blender or two forks until butter resembles oatmeal flakes.
  5. Stir in milk. Dough should slightly sticky, but holds together in a shaggy ball.
  6. Flour your work surface: can be a large cutting board, clean countertop, or cheese cloth.
  7. Dump mixture onto work surface and knead dough, sprinkle more flour on top of dough as needed to make it easier to work with. Knead dough for 2 minutes.
  8. Make 2 inch balls of dough and place in your prepared pan. It’s okay for them to touch a bit.
  9. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes or until lightly browned on the top of your biscuits.
