Cake Donuts

These donuts are an explosion of color. They have a soft, cakey inside with a crisp glaze to crackle when you bite into them. We like using a metal donut pan for these, but a silicone one will work as well. They are a favorite birthday breakfast around our house, but I recommend making them any time you want. They are a perfect way to get birthday cake vibes in a short amount of time.

Cake Donuts

Ingredients

Donuts

¼ cup butter

¼ cup neutral oil (canola is a good choice)

½ cup white sugar

⅓ cup brown sugar

2 teaspoons vanilla

2 eggs

1 ½ teaspoon baking powder

¼ teaspoon baking soda

¾ teaspoon salt

2 ⅔ cups all purpose flour

1 cup milk

½ cup rainbow sprinkles (plus extra for topping)

Glaze

1 ½ cup powdered sugar

¼ cup whole milk

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 425 degrees Fahrenheit.
  2. Spray your donut pan with cooking spray.
  3. Melt your butter in a small bowl in the microwave. Heat it in 15 second bursts and stir in between so that it doesn’t get heat pockets and explode butter all over your microwave.
  4. Add butter, oil, white sugar, brown sugar, and vanilla to a large mixing bowl.
  5. Add eggs one at a time. Stir in between each egg.
  6. In a medium bowl, combine baking powder, baking soda, salt, and flour. Stir to combine.
  7. Add a third of your flour mixture to your sugar mixture and stir to combine.
  8. Add half of your milk to the mixture. Stir to combine.
  9. Add a third of your flour mixture to the mix. Stir to combine.
  10. Add the rest of your milk. Stir.
  11. Add the last of your flour mix. Stir.
  12. Add your sprinkles and gently fold into your batter.
  13. Scoop your batter into a gallon sized zip top bag. Cut a small hole in the corner of your bag.
  14. Squeeze your batter into your donut pan in the shape of a ring. It doesn’t have to be completely filled up.
  15. Bake for 10-12 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the donuts comes out clean.
  16. Combine all ingredients for your glaze in a medium bowl and whisk to combine.
  17. Once your donuts are cool, dip them into your glaze. Before the glaze has hardened, sprinkle your sprinkles on top of the glaze.
