These donuts are an explosion of color. They have a soft, cakey inside with a crisp glaze to crackle when you bite into them. We like using a metal donut pan for these, but a silicone one will work as well. They are a favorite birthday breakfast around our house, but I recommend making them any time you want. They are a perfect way to get birthday cake vibes in a short amount of time.

Cake Donuts
Ingredients
Donuts
¼ cup butter
¼ cup neutral oil (canola is a good choice)
½ cup white sugar
⅓ cup brown sugar
2 teaspoons vanilla
2 eggs
1 ½ teaspoon baking powder
¼ teaspoon baking soda
¾ teaspoon salt
2 ⅔ cups all purpose flour
1 cup milk
½ cup rainbow sprinkles (plus extra for topping)
Glaze
1 ½ cup powdered sugar
¼ cup whole milk
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 425 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Spray your donut pan with cooking spray.
- Melt your butter in a small bowl in the microwave. Heat it in 15 second bursts and stir in between so that it doesn’t get heat pockets and explode butter all over your microwave.
- Add butter, oil, white sugar, brown sugar, and vanilla to a large mixing bowl.
- Add eggs one at a time. Stir in between each egg.
- In a medium bowl, combine baking powder, baking soda, salt, and flour. Stir to combine.
- Add a third of your flour mixture to your sugar mixture and stir to combine.
- Add half of your milk to the mixture. Stir to combine.
- Add a third of your flour mixture to the mix. Stir to combine.
- Add the rest of your milk. Stir.
- Add the last of your flour mix. Stir.
- Add your sprinkles and gently fold into your batter.
- Scoop your batter into a gallon sized zip top bag. Cut a small hole in the corner of your bag.
- Squeeze your batter into your donut pan in the shape of a ring. It doesn’t have to be completely filled up.
- Bake for 10-12 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the donuts comes out clean.
- Combine all ingredients for your glaze in a medium bowl and whisk to combine.
- Once your donuts are cool, dip them into your glaze. Before the glaze has hardened, sprinkle your sprinkles on top of the glaze.
