I love a recipe that makes something delicious out of something that isn’t always considered high class fare. Gumbo comes to mind. Also boudin. Mashed garlic turnips are right up there. I love balancing out the bitterness of the turnip with potatoes. It helps me eat more seasonally, and is a great way to introduce turnips to young people. If at all possible, I always recommend making their first experience with a new vegetable be a delicious one.

Ingredients
1 pound turnips
2 pounds potaotes (I like golden)
4 Tablespoons butter
2 teaspoons salt
1 teaspoon black pepper
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 cup whole milk
Instructions
- Boil potatoes and turnips in a large pot of water until easily pierced with a fork.
- Drain potatoes and turnips. Add to a large bowl.
- While potatoes and turnips are hot, add rest of ingredients. Blend with a hand mixer until very smooth.
- Serve warm.
